A Health Teacher Teaches Her Pupils About The Relevance Of Alcoholism Signs

Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged co-ed high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only two or three years, she had already established a reputation as a person with educational methods that stimulated and encouraged her students to learn and to think.

For example, one Thursday morning at 8:00 she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a more broad-based standpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific standpoint."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will absolutely validate that a drinker with a drinking problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a drinker manifests, the stronger the probability that she or he is an alcoholic."

Miss Jackson then explained to the students in the class that each pupil would be responsible for researching four alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the rest of the class by way of a fifteen minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to study the list and rank the top nine alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After approximately twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the students in her classroom that after she assesses the results, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the students in her class to go over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within 10 or 20 seconds, virtually everyone in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was evident that the students had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, just about every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, specifically, "Do you feel exceedingly ill when you refrain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the students in her class why this answer was the most accurate indicator of alcoholism. She underscored the fact that the chief difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

Basically this means that when a person who is addicted to alcohol all of a sudden stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the person who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to grasp the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had motivated and stimulated the students in her class to stop and think about a significant social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
